Deep Fried Cheese Curds
So I know deep fried cheese curds is not a pastry. But.... Bryan and I both love going to Culvers and getting cheese curds, so this weekend Bryan had the idea to make homemade cheese curds! These cheese curds are so delicious! If you like fair food you will love these cheese curds! They are a great appetizer to go with a dinner or if you need something at a party these are excellent!
Yields: Serves Many
Ingredients:
Vegetable oil for frying
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup of milk or beer
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 9 oz. package of fresh cheese curds, room temperature
Directions:
- In a deep fryer or large pot, heat vegetable oil.
- In a medium bowl, combine egg, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, and milk OR beer until well blended.
- Add flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder; mix until smooth
- Drop cheese curds in batter. Using a spoon, turn cheese curds to coat thoroughly.
- A few at a time, drop the coated curds into the hot oil; fry around 1 minute or until golden brown and puffed, turn to coat all sides.
My Sous-Chef frying up the cheese curds - Remove from hot oil and drain on paper towels. Allow fried cheese curds to cool a couple of minutes before eating
Overall this recipe is simple to make, if you have a stove and a pan anyone can make this. You just need to be careful of the oil and make sure it is not spitting everywhere and not burning yourself or the food. I would like to try them again and make them with beer instead of milk to see if it will really change the flavor. If you are from Wisconsin you will LOVE these. They taste just like the ones at Culvers. They have a good crispy outside and oozy drippy cheese on the inside.
Enjoy!!
